Pap, or ogi (some call it akamu), is one of those Nigerians meals that are so dear. Just raising a scoop of some of the warm goodness would naturally bring back comforting memories. And the thing about pap is, though it is usually best for those Saturday mornings, it also works well as a quick breakfast before heading out or something light and satisfying for lunch. However, pap on its own? Not at all funny. Haha. The beauty of pap is usually revealed when paired with the right side dishes. In this blog post, I will be showing in some of the best foods that Nigerians enjoy with their bowl of warm or even piping hot pap.

1. Akara (Bean Cakes)

Akara and pap are one of the most popular Nigerian food combinations. The crispy, savory taste of akara balances perfectly with the smoothness of pap. It’s one of those pairings that just feel right and works for any time of the day.

2. Moi Moi (Steamed Bean Pudding)

Moi moi is another classic choice with pap. It can be plain or made with extras like eggs or fish. Moinmoin simply blends so well with the mild tang of pap. With every spoonful comes a satisfaction that no Nigerian can explain, haha.

3. Fried Plantains (Dodo)

Fried plantains are a fantastic option to eat with pap. The natural sweetness of dodo complements the slightly tangy taste of pap. If you are trying this method, you might like to reduce the sweetener you add to your pap or skip it all together. The taste of the dodo will make the love go round and round, you know? Haha. But if you have a sweet tooth, just keep it sweet. This combo is all you need if you’re in the mood for something sweet and filling.

4. Groundnuts (Peanuts)

This is one of the simplest and most affordable side dishes for pap. You can dump a handful of roasted groundnuts into your pap cup to add crunch and a nutty flavor. Or you can serve on another dish and just take a few of the nuts after gulping down one or two spoonfuls of milky pap. This option is quick, easy, and always a win.

5. Fried Yam or Sweet Potatoes

This might not be really common everywhere but it works. Yes, fried yams or fried potatoes! This combination is especially great when you need a more filling meal. If you go this route, you won’t be very hungry too soon. Add a little pepper sauce to your fried ‘tuber cuts’ and you’ve made a great combo. It would be a mix of chewy, starchy bite contrasting nicely with the softness of the pap.
