Leaving Nigeria doesn’t just mean leaving behind family and friends. It means leaving behind the food. And to be frank, Nigerian food is not something you just “replace” abroad. You can try to explain it to others, you can try to cook it in your new kitchen, but some things just don’t taste the same outside Naija.

It’s no secret that spices and seasonings are an absolutely essential aspect of any recipe, and without them our dishes would be left bland and lackluster, missing that extra burst of heat, sweetness, or depth of flavor.

Nigerians would even sometimes incorporate ground crayfish into the first solid foods of their babies because of the high level of nutrients it contains. Crayfish can be added to virtually all Nigerian meals. Rice, beans, eggs, stew- just name it.
