Beans are a staple in many Nigerian homes. They are filling, nutritious, and go well with almost anything. They go with stew, plantain, rice, or just on their own. But to be honest, the gas issues that come after eating beans can be a real problem. Nobody wants to deal with bloating, stomach discomfort, or the awkwardness that comes with it.

If you love beans but don’t love the after-effects, don’t worry. There are simple ways to cook them so they’re easier on your stomach yet still very delicious.

1. Soak the Beans Before Cooking

One of the best ways to reduce gas in beans is to soak them before cooking. This helps break down some of the complex sugars that cause bloating.

  • Rinse the beans thoroughly.
  • Soak them in plenty of water for at least 5-8 hours or overnight.
  • Drain and rinse them again before cooking.
  • If you don’t have time for a long soak, a quick soak works too. Just boil the beans for 5 minutes, turn off the heat, and let them sit in the hot water for an hour before draining and cooking with fresh water.

2. Cook with Ginger or Garlic

Adding ginger or garlic to your beans as they cook can help with digestion. These natural ingredients break down gas-producing compounds and add a nice flavor to the dish.

  • Use fresh ginger slices or grated ginger for best results.
  • If using garlic, chop or crush it before adding it to the beans.

3. Try Bay Leaves or Scent Leaves

Bay leaves and scent leaves (efirin) are great for reducing bloating. Just toss a few leaves into the pot while cooking. They add a subtle aroma and make the beans easier to digest.

4. Change the Water While Cooking

Even after soaking, some gas-causing compounds remain. A simple trick is to change the water once the beans have boiled for about 10-15 minutes.

  • Boil the beans in fresh water.
  • After 10-15 minutes, drain the water.
  • Add fresh hot water and continue cooking until soft.
  • This removes more of the indigestible sugars that cause gas.

5. Cook Until Completely Soft

Half-cooked beans are harder to digest. Make sure your beans are fully cooked and soft before eating. A pressure cooker can help speed up the process while making the beans even easier on the stomach.

6. Eat Beans with Fiber-Rich Foods

Pairing beans with fiber-rich foods like vegetables or whole grains can help digestion. A good combo is beans with vegetable sauce, brown rice, or yam. The fiber helps move food through your system faster, reducing bloating.

7. Start with Small Portions

If you’re not used to eating beans often, start with smaller portions and increase gradually. This gives your digestive system time to adjust.
